Mrs. Viola Cohen Thompson, 86

Mrs. Viola Cohen Thompson 86, of 203 Calhoun St. Winnsboro SC, passed away on Thurs. Dec. 24, 2015 at the Agape Hospice House in Columbia SC. She is survived by her daughters; Helen (Harold) Heath and Lavern Thompson both of Winnsboro SC, two grandchildren;  Melanie (Stewart) Goudelock of Williamsburg VA and Vilissa Thompson of the home; one great grandson; Caelan Goudelock and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral will be 1:00pm (12:00 noon viewing) Wed. Dec. 30, 2015 @ St. Mark Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tues. Dec. 29, 2015 from 1pm -7pm at Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home. The family will receive guests at Mrs. Helen Heath home at 210 Calhoun St. Winnsboro SC. Steven E.Hemphill,47

Mr. Steven E. Hemphill 47, of 2831 Syrup Mill Rd. Ridgeway, South Carolina passed away on Wednesday December 23, 2015 at Palmetto Health Richland. He was born on July 12, 1968 to Mamie H. Neal and the late Robert E. Hemphill. Steven was a graduate of the Fairfield County School System and Midland Technical College, where he received a degree in diesel mechanics. He worked as a mechanic and a welder for many years before his illness. Steven was a loving person that loved life and the people in it. He loved to laugh and crack jokes with his family and friends. Steven leaves to cherish his memories two sons: Devon Chapelle of Winnsboro SC and Quentin Hemphill of Blythewood SC, one daughter: Kiara Hemphill of Blythewood SC, his mother: Mamie Neal of the home, one sister: Bernadette (Jerry) Hammond of Columbia SC, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly. A special friend: Ms. Green of Winnsboro SC. Funeral services will be 2:30pm Sunday December 27, 2015 at The Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home Chapel. Viewing will be Saturday December 26, 2015 from 2pm until 7pm. A private burial will be at a later date.

Mrs. Sara Nora Mobley Barnes, 88


Mrs. Sara Mobley Barnes of 209 Calhoun Street, Winnsboro, SC, peacefully transitioned from time back into eternity on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital, Columbia SC.

Mrs. Barnes was a daughter of the late Will J. and Helen Mobley and the widow of Brady Barnes.  Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and John; two sisters, Florence and Ophelia; and godson Ronald Cunningham, Jr.

Mrs. Barnes was educated in the Fairfield County schools.  She first attended Coulter College in Cheraw, SC and then transferred to Barber Scotia College in Concord, NC.  She received her degree in elementary education in 1948.  After graduation she worked in Blackville County briefly before returning to teach in Fairfield County.  She spent a number of years at Broxton Elementary School in Broxton, GA before returning again to South Carolina.  From the 1969-1970 school year until her retirement in 1987 she taught at Kelly Miller Elementary School in the Greenbriar section of Fairfield County.

Mrs. Barnes had a passion for teaching and all things related.  In addition to normal classroom tasks, she was very active in extra curricula activities related to the schools.  In the days of operettas and school plays, she enjoyed designing and sewing costumes.  Her contribution to the Halloween Carnival celebration was always making bright red candied apples and operating the cotton candy machine.  Mrs. Barnes was loved by her students often followed her home and visited on the weekends.  As recently as last month her former students visited her at Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by her daughter Joyce Barnes Gladney (Winnsboro), her son Bradford Barnes and his daughter Chastity (Newberry, SC).  She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Connie Barnes Croff (Charles) of Baxley, GA and her niece, Elizabeth Barnes Bouknight (Winnsboro) whom she reared and loved as daughters.  She also will be lovingly remembered by their children and a host of other nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by four brothers, Willie J. Mobley (Hartford, CT); George D. Mobley (Winnsboro); Don E. Mobley (Nashville, TN); and Harold R. Mobley (Suffolk, VA); and one sister, Helen Patricia Cooks (Indian Head, MD).


The Homegoing Service for Mrs. Barnes will be held on Friday, December 18 at 1PM at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 311 South Vanderhorst Street in Winnsboro.  Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home is assisting the family.    The family will receive visitors on Thursday, December 17 from 3pm to 6pm at the funeral home.
