David Smith, Jr., son the late David Smith Jr. and Ollie
Bea Gilchrist Smith, departed this life on Monday, August 3, 2015 at home in
Winnsboro, SC.
David was born in Chesterfield, SC, was raised in Ossining,
NY and was a record holding basketball and football player in high school. He
attended junior colleges under basketball scholarships. David enlisted in the
National Guard, worked for Con Edison, worked as an engineer for several
Westchester County hotels, and later became a Westchester County Department of
Correction Officer.
In 2002, David was honorably discharged as a Sergeant with
the US Army National Guard. In 2007 and he retired as a Correction Officer with
the Westchester County Department of Correction. In 2011 he and his wife relocated to SC where
they built their retirement home, and in 2012 David retired from the US Army
National Guard.
David joined Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in Winnsboro
in 2011, where he faithfully attended Sunday School and regular service when
his condition permitted. He loved hearing the church choir sing the old gospel
songs and getting a word from his pastor.
David leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife, Mattie
(Cookie) Stewart Grady Smith; his brothers Clinton Louis Smith, Rogers (Venus) Smith,
Michael (Leah) Smith and James Smith of Ossining NY; his sisters Evelyn Smith Simmons
and Ollie Arie Smith of Ossining, NY ; Aunts Sylvia Hazel of CT, Frances Smith of Ossining, NY and Mazella Gilchrist of Greensboro,
NC; Uncle Louis T. Gilchrist of Ossining, NY; mother-in-law Almeter Stewart Grady of Tarrytown NY; stepson Will Jay (Maureen) Simmons, III and
grandchildren Christian Tyler Simmons, Brianna Wallace and Mariah Wallace of
Durham, NC; nieces Ashia Johnson of Ossining, NY and Eyana (Larry) Esters of
Bowie, MD; nephews Maurice (Crystina) Johnson of Philadelphia, PA, Brian
Johnson of Ossining NY, and Donte
(Michelle) Battle of Florida; and Denye and Jafye of Ossining, NY;great nieces Abionah Smith, Kiera Battle, and
Charis Esters, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be August 8, 2015 @ 11:00am (10:00am viewing) Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Visitation will be Friday August 7, 2015 from 1pm to 7pm at Russell McCutchen Funeral Home Winnsboro SC.
