Ms. Johnnie Mae Chambers, 72


Mrs. Johnnie Mae Davis, was born Oct 19, 1944 to Simon Davis and Irene Davis.  She attended Fairfield County School in Winnsboro, SC.  As a believer in education, she went to The Culinary Institute of America in New York City where she pursued her professional education.

After high school, she married Elbert J. Owens, a retired Master Chief in Communication.  This union produced Andre Owens (Kimberly), Beverly Owens (Anthony), Eddie Owens (Helen), and Gerald Owens.  She also leaves to cherish her memory, her grandchildren, Irene Foster, Elijah Owens, Gerald Owens Jr., Chelsey Owens, Chazz Owens and Grace Chambers and one sister Lucy Taylor (William).

In 1980 she joined Military Sealift Command.  Quickly she rose to the rank of Chief Steward.  In 2000 she retired.  After retiring she became a foster parent.  As a foster parent, she provided nurturing and love to many children in the environment of her Christian home.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lindon Chambers and sister Hattie Sims, brothers Simon Davis, John Henry Davis, Thomas Davis, Joseph Davis and Osmond Davis.

Mrs. Johnnie Mae Davis lived a life characterized by a strong faith in God.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who, in love, will continue to cherish found memories shared with her in life.


Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday November 12, 2016 @ Calvary Presbyterian Church Winnsboro SC 29180 with burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery Winnsboro SC 29180. Visitation will be 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday November 11, 2016 at Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, 324 S. Vanderhorst St. Winnsboro SC with Eastern Star rites starting at 7:00 pm.

  1. I wanted to reach out to you during this sad time to offer my condolences. While nothing will completely take away your grief, by meditating on God's promises found in the Bible, you can find real hope and the strength to keep going. I have found the scripture at Isaiah 25:8 to be especially comforting. Here it promises that God "will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces."
