A dedicated and humble man of God,
Rev. Terry Leon Thompson, the youngest of six sons of the late James and Eloise
Gadson Thompson, was born December 5, 1962 in Jenkinsville, S.C.
Rev. Thompson entered into eternal
rest on November 29, 2017 at 1:25 p.m. at Richland Memorial Hospital.
After the passing of his beloved
parents, Rev. Thompson became the devoted son of Mrs. Bessie M. Gregg. She was
a special mother to him.
Rev. Thompson received his early
education in the Fairfield County Public School System and graduated from
McCrorey-Liston High School, Blair, S.C.
He continued his education at Allen University, Columbia, S.C. and did
further studies at Midlands Technical College, Columbia, S.C. and the
University of South Carolina.
Rev. Thompson began his Christian
journey at an early age at White Hall A.M.E. Church in Jenkinsville, S.C. He enjoyed and grew in faith while serving as
a member on different organizations and committees. He had a keen interest in learning about
God’s word, so he worked diligently with the Sunday School. He admired his Sunday School teachers, so he
listened attentively, asked questions and learned more about God’s Word. The week of Daily Vacation Bible School was a
joyous time. Again Rev. Thompson learned
more about God’s word, played games and looked forward to the refreshments.
Rev. Thompson was called by God to
preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He
preached his Initial Sermon on April 9, 1989 at White Hall A.M.E. Church in
Jenkinsville, S.C., under the pastoralship of Rev. George Ashford. He was ordained on October 13, 1991, as an
Itinerant Deacon. Bishop Frederick E. James was the Presiding Bishop.
Rev. Thompson’s early church
appointments were Mt. Eden A.M.E. Church, Carlisle, S.C., Fairview A.M.E.
Church, Winnsboro, S.C., Friendship A.M.E. Church, Blair, S.C., and Shiloh
A.M.E. Church, Winnsboro, S.C. Rev. Thompson
pastored at those four churches for five years.
The next eight years he served as assistant pastor at Gethsemane Baptist
Church, Blair, S.C. After Gethsemane,
Rev. Thompson returned to his first love on his Christian journey, the African
Methodist Church. Rev. Thompson later
became Assistant Pastor at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. He was a servant of God
and his community.
Rev. Thompson served as Past Master
of United Lodge #401, demitted to Blue Valley Lodge #264. He was also a member of the Seven Royal Arch,
C.C. Johnson Consistory #136nd Degree.
Rev. Thompson also served as the president of the
Jenkinsville-Monticello-Horeb Volunteer Fire Department and later as
Captain. He was employed with Glenn
Associate Surveying, Inc. of Jenkinsville, S.C. for twenty-nine and a half
years.
Rev. Thompson was a man of great
humility, patience and love for mankind.
He was married to Rayphaela Green
and to this union one son and one daughter were born.
Rev. Thompson leaves to cherish his
memories two sons: Morris (Elizabeth) Thompson, Columbia, S.C.; Terrence Leon
Thompson, Jenkinsville, S.C.; one daughter, Shanna Shaneal Thompson,
Jenkinsville, S.C.; six brothers: Harold (Ann) Lyles and Henry Lyles,
Jenkinsville, S.C., Esau Dansby Gregg, Atlanta, GA; Melvin (Patricia) Thompson,
Michael Thompson, and Larry Thompson, all of Jenkinsville, S.C.; six aunts:
Dorothy Thompson and Lula Mae Trapp, New York, Coral Summers and Betty Kelly,
Columbia, S.C., Vertie (Evex) Martin and Martha Ginyard, Jenkinsville, S.C.;
two uncles: Ezell Summers, Columbia, S.C.; J.O. Wendell Martin, Jenkinsville,
S.C.; four grand-children: Niasia, Alycia, Marrisha, Morris Leon; nieces,
nephews, and may other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his
father, mother, and three brothers, James C. Thompson and A. Ray Thompson of
Jenkinsville, S.C. and Henry Lyles of Columbia, S.C.
Services will be 1:00pm (12 noon viewing)
Tuesday December 5, 2017 @ Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with burial in the
church cemetery. Visitation will be 1:00pm to 7:00pm Monday December 4, 2017 @
Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, 324 S. Vanderhorst St. Winnsboro, S.C. 29180.
