Mrs. Viola Cohen Thompson, 86

Mrs. Viola Cohen Thompson 86, of 203 Calhoun St. Winnsboro SC, passed away on Thurs. Dec. 24, 2015 at the Agape Hospice House in Columbia SC. She is survived by her daughters; Helen (Harold) Heath and Lavern Thompson both of Winnsboro SC, two grandchildren;  Melanie (Stewart) Goudelock of Williamsburg VA and Vilissa Thompson of the home; one great grandson; Caelan Goudelock and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral will be 1:00pm (12:00 noon viewing) Wed. Dec. 30, 2015 @ St. Mark Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tues. Steven E.Hemphill,47

Mr. Steven E. Hemphill 47, of 2831 Syrup Mill Rd. Ridgeway, South Carolina passed away on Wednesday December 23, 2015 at Palmetto Health Richland. He was born on July 12, 1968 to Mamie H. Neal and the late Robert E. Hemphill. Steven was a graduate of the Fairfield County School System and Midland Technical College, where he received a degree in diesel mechanics. He worked as a mechanic and a welder for many years before his illness. Steven was a loving person that loved life and the people in it. He loved to laugh and crack jokes with his family and friends. Steven leaves to cherish his memories two sons: Devon Chapelle of Winnsboro SC and Quentin Hemphill of Blythewood SC, one daughter: Kiara Hemphill of Blythewood SC, his mother: Mamie Neal of the home, one sister: Bernadette (Jerry) Hammond of Columbia SC, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly. A special friend: Ms. Green of Winnsboro SC. Funeral services will be 2:30pm Sunday December 27, 2015 at The Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Sara Nora Mobley Barnes, 88


Mrs. Sara Mobley Barnes of 209 Calhoun Street, Winnsboro, SC, peacefully transitioned from time back into eternity on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital, Columbia SC.

Mrs. Barnes was a daughter of the late Will J. and Helen Mobley and the widow of Brady Barnes.  Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and John; two sisters, Florence and Ophelia; and godson Ronald Cunningham, Jr.

Mrs. Barnes was educated in the Fairfield County schools.  She first attended Coulter College in Cheraw, SC and then transferred to Barber Scotia College in Concord, NC.  She received her degree in elementary education in 1948.  After graduation she worked in Blackville County briefly before returning to teach in Fairfield County.  She spent a number of years at Broxton Elementary School in Broxton, GA before returning again to South Carolina.  From the 1969-1970 school year until her retirement in 1987 she taught at Kelly Miller Elementary School in the Greenbriar section of Fairfield County.

Mrs. Barnes had a passion for teaching and all things related.  In addition to normal classroom tasks, she was very active in extra curricula activities related to the schools.  In the days of operettas and school plays, she enjoyed designing and sewing costumes.  Her contribution to the Halloween Carnival celebration was always making bright red candied apples and operating the cotton candy machine.  Mrs. Barnes was loved by her students often followed her home and visited on the weekends.  As recently as last month her former students visited her at Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by her daughter Joyce Barnes Gladney (Winnsboro), her son Bradford Barnes and his daughter Chastity (Newberry, SC).  She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Connie Barnes Croff (Charles) of Baxley, GA and her niece, Elizabeth Barnes Bouknight (Winnsboro) whom she reared and loved as daughters.  She also will be lovingly remembered by their children and a host of other nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by four brothers, Willie J. Mobley (Hartford, CT); George D. Mobley (Winnsboro); Don E. Mobley (Nashville, TN); and Harold R. Mobley (Suffolk, VA); and one sister, Helen Patricia Cooks (Indian Head, MD).


The Homegoing Service for Mrs. Barnes will be held on Friday, December 18 at 1PM at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 311 South Vanderhorst Street in Winnsboro.  Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home is assisting the family.    The family will receive visitors on Thursday, December 17 from 3pm to 6pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. Emma M. Ashford, 80 of 56 Sunshine Drive Winnsboro SC passed away peacefully on November 19, 2015. Born on January 23, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Emma Lyles Owens. She is
survived by her husband Mr. Willie Lee Ashford of Winnsboro SC. Four sons: Willie Jr., Lonzell Ashford, Melvin (Ruby) Ashford and Joe Louis Trapp. Three daughters: Emma L. Ashford, Evelyn Ashford and Rosa (Charles) Gadson all of Winnsboro SC. Homegoing services will be 3:00pm (2:00pm viewing) Sunday November 22, 2015 at Morris Creek Baptist Church , 1401 Morris Creek Rd Winnsboro SC. Mr. Terry Ray Bass, 62

Terry Ray Bass, 62, of  Winnsboro, S.C. went home to be with the LORD on November

15, 2015.  Born in Ridgeway, S.C. on January 1, 1953, he was the son of the late

Charlie E. and Dorothy P. Bass.

 Terry was an Automotive Engineer with Standard Products (Cooper Tire) for over 20

years. Never wanting to retire - Terry continued to reinvent himself as a self employed

entrepreneur, and taught himself different trades. Those included photography ;

Entertaining around S.C. as a DJ with a great sense of humor and quick wit;  and

lastly as a computer expert; repairing computer hardware, programming; installing and

resolving  software issues for many businesses and individuals. He taught some

computer classes to others as well.  Terry became known

as  THE PC DUDE.  He loved to hunt, fish, cook, build things, and garden. Terry always

shared his remarkable vegetables with family, neighbors and friends.

Most importantly, Terry gave his life to The Lord early this year. 

He is survived by a "special" loved one, Lisa Denise Heustess, the love of his life and

Caregiver;  His brother Charles (Glenda) Bass of Blythewood ;  Five sisters: Sarah

Hilliard of Ridgeway;  Lillian Smith,  Dorothy(Norman) Rogers,  Barbara Marlow, all of

Columbia; and Dinah Hollenbeck of West Columbia; as well as many nieces and

nephews. Special thanks are given by Lisa and Terry’s family to close friends  Allen

Pearson, and Jessica Mattox who were always there for him; entrepreneur and landlord

Gloria Blackwood for her kindness and friendship to Terry and Lisa; SC Oncology, and

Tri-County-Hospice.   

Visitation will be held at Russell McCutchen Funeral Home in Winnsboro on

Wednesday, November 18, from 5:00 until 7;00 PM.  On Thursday, November 19 ,2015,

An open casket viewing is available from 12;00 to 1:00 in  the sanctuary of The First

Church of  The Nazarene in Winnsboro, followed by A Celebration of Terry's life at 1:00

Burial will follow at  Aimwell Cemetery, Ridgeway, S.C.

Mrs. Ruth Ann Taylor, 61

Mrs. Ruth Ann Taylor 61 was born on October 28, 1954 in Winnsboro SC to the late General Smith Sr.  and Elnora Robinson Smith. Ruth was called home by the Lord on Thursday evening November 12, 2015.

Ruth graduated from Winnsboro High School, she was a babysitter and did day work in the Winnsboro area during her early years.
Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband Lindsey Taylor and by her brothers Larry Smith and Leslie Smith.

Ruth leaves to cherish her memories son: Kerry Smith, daughter: Canisha Harris, one brother : General Smith Jr. (Dorothy), all of Winnsboro SC, two grandkids: De’Adrian Cole and Jalayah Cole both of Winnsboro SC, one goddaughter Marquita Carter of Winnsboro SC, five nieces, three great nephews, five great nieces, one great- great nephew and a host of other family and friends.

Mrs.Beatrice Lee Padgett, 96

Mrs. Beatrice Lee Padgett of 1784 West Peach Road, Winnsboro, SC, peacefully passed from this life to her heavenly home on October 31, 2015 at the Physical Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, Spartanburg, SC.

 Born on April 30, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Robertson and the late Lucy Hall Robertson.  The widow of the late Richard Padgett, Mrs. Padgett was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church in Winnsboro where she served as the Mother of the Church.  She also served as a member of the Deaconess Ministry, Sunday School teacher, and member of the Jubilee Choir.  Mrs. Padgett was a member of the Progressive No. 253 Order of the Eastern Stars.  In her latter years Mrs. Padgett became a watch care member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC.

A hard worker and a woman of integrity, she gave her all in whatever she was called to do.  She was well-known for baking cakes, gardening, and sewing.  But most of all, she enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and spending time with her siblings and extended family.

Mrs. Padgett is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Janice Gail Padgett (Robert) Brewer of Spartanburg, SC; two grandchildren:  Richard (Shannan) Brewer of Fountain Inn, SC; Dr. Robyn Brewer (Donnie) Littlejohn of Gaffney, SC; three great-grandchildren:  Rebekah Brewer, Ryan Brewer, and Rachel Brewer, all of Fountain Inn; one brother, Thomas C. Robinson of Winston-Salem, NC; four sisters:  Hattie R. Brice of Blair, SC, Fannie R. Davis and Constance R. Bookert, both of Columbia, SC; and Carrie Etta R. (Ret. Bishop Z. L.) Grady of Charleston, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the St. Luke Baptist Church Building Fund, 183 St. Luke Church Road, Winnsboro, SC 29180 or the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church Nehemiah Project, P.O. Box 6001, Spartanburg, SC 29304.

Homegoing services will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at St. Luke Baptist Church, Winnsboro, SC.  Services will be officiated by Rev. Jasper Lloyd, Pastor of the church and the homegoing message will be delivered by Rev. Dr. M. Keith McDaniel, Sr., Pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church of Spartanburg, SC.  The interment will immediately follow the homegoing services at the church cemetery.  The family will be receiving friends at the home at the Peach Road residence.   Visitation will be at the Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, 324 S. Mrs. Ethel Bell McCrorey-Sanders, 92



Ms. Ethel Bell McCrorey-Sanders was born on January 13, 1923.  She was the second child of eight (8) born to the late Willie Henry and Carrie Alice McDaniel-McCrorey in Winnsboro, SC.  She transitioned form her earthly life to eternal life with Christ on September 21, 2015.

Ethel Bell was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County.

Ethel Bell was preceded in death by:  her siblings, Lonnie, Walter, Willie (Bill), Wardell, Bertha, Betty, and Johnnie Mae McCrorey.

Ethel Bell was married to the late John Sanders.  She had eleven (11) children and she was preceded in death by one son, Willie Frank Sanders.

Those left to grieve her passing and celebrate her home going are eight (8) daughter:  Sara (late Willie Henry) Moore, Margaret (Preston) Hall, Mae Travis “Tink” (Joe) Sanders, Patricia (Mary) Mobley, Christine (Theodore) Moore, Linda (Shakoor) Bay, Thomasine (Bo) Sawyer, Yvette (John) Backstrom; two (2) sons, Ernest “Red” (Mary) Sanders, Lavern (Brenda) Boone; one daughter-in-law, Deborah Addison-Sanders; 25 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 29  great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and a devoted friend, Lawrence Brown.
Funeral services will be 1:00 (12 noon viewing) Thursday October 1, 2015 at Bethesda AME Zion Church of Winnsboro SC with burial at Old Gladden Grove Cemetery, Great Falls SC.

Mrs. Mary J. Daniels, 59, of Winnsboro, SC died September 4, 2015 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.  She was born on September 14, 1955, Winnsboro, SC. And was retired from SC Department of Mental Health.  She is survived by her husband, Sylvester Daniels of the home and Daughters: Ms. Tashaba Daniels, Winnsboro, SC and Mrs. Sylvetta (Carlos) Thompson, Columbia, SC, Son; Mr. Carlos Thompson. Mr. Dolphus D. Thompson Sr., 77

Dolphus Damon Thompson, Sr. was born October 8, 1937 to the late Ida (Hopkins) and Bleach Thompson.  He attend McCrory-Liston public schools and enlisted in The United States Army. He served three years during the Korean War from 1955 to 1958, where he was honorably discharged.

Dolphus moved to Columbus, Ohio where he met and married Alethia Berry and they had six children.  During the army, his military training did prepare him to work for various manufacturers. Some of the jobs he worked, included an industrial crane operator as well as a bakers assistant; but mostly he was a professional presser for the Hopkin's family's dry cleaning business.      

Dolphus was preceded in death by one son: Micros Thompson, four sisters: Shirley, Willie B., Doris & Helen, and two brothers: Jerome and O'Bear. He is survived by 6 children: Deirdre, Deborah (Bostick), Dolphus Jr., John, Christopher, and Ebony Johnson. Also three sisters: Mary Ruth (Lewis), Essie (Goodwin), and Nancy "Tillie" (Hall), grandchildren, great-grandchild, and a host of other relatives and friends.

 The funeral services will be 11:00am Saturday, September 5, 2015, at the Gethsemane Baptist Church, Blair, SC. Interment will be in the Thompson Family Cemetery. James A. Griffin, 60

Mr. James A. Griffin was born on March 23, 1955 in Blair, SC.  He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, Aug 25, 2015.  Alford joined Gethsemane Baptist Church as a young man.
Alford leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, Wenderlyn Gallmon, granddaughter, Winter Z. Gallmon of Newberry, SC; Four Brothers, Robert Trapp, Theodore Black, Clarence  Jerome Griffin, and Clemente Griffin.  Five sisters; Beverly G. Henderson, Stephanie Griffin, Shelia English, Debbie Griffin and Sharon LaRhonda Griffin.  Three Aunts and a host of Nieces, Nephews, cousins and friends with which he shared a special bond.

Mr. Evan Leroy Pauling, 40


 Mr. Evan Leroy Pauling was born March 6, 1975 in Columbia, SC. He was the firstborn of the three children of  Mr. Leroy and Mrs. Mamie Pauling.
 Evan was a greatly loved big brother to his sister, Mrs. Tamekia (James) Grant, now of Charlotte, NC and his  little brother, Mr. Irvin T. Pauling, Sr. of Winnsboro, SC. He was a beloved son to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy  Pauling of Winnsboro, SC.
 Evan Pauling was a loving husband to his sweetheart, Mrs. Lakesha Yates Pauling, whom he married on June  15, 1996.
 He was the caring, protective father of three daughters, Ms. Miriam Glover, of Hopkins, SC; Miss Michelle  Pauling and “Golden” to Miss Kiana Pauling of the home and the proud grandfather of one granddaughter, Miss  Zhalah Alston of Hopkins, SC.
 Mr. Evan Pauling is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Alice Pauling. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Mr. Ira Pauling, Sr., his maternal grandparents, Mr. Eddie Evans, Sr. and Mrs. Mattie Evans, and his uncles: Mr. Eddie Evans, Jr. and Mr. Arthur Pauling. He leaves his paternal aunts: Mrs. Mary Jane (Bernard) Jackson, Mrs. Gail (Steve) Frank of Winnsboro, SC; Mrs. Brenda (Andy) Young of Houston, TX; Mrs. Corrine Simon of Silver Spring, MD; his maternal aunts: Mrs. Mattie L. (James) Smiling of Columbia, SC and Mrs. Mary Robinson of Winnsboro, SC; his paternal uncles: Mr. Ira (Lizzie) Pauling, Jr. of Columbia, SC; Mr. Joseph (Christabell) Pauling of Winnsboro, SC; Mr. James (Brenda) Pauling of Columbia, SC; Mr. Heyward (Angela) Pauling of Gaston, SC; and his maternal uncles: Mr. James Evans of Cayce, SC; Mr. Leroy (Dora) Evans of Winnsboro, SC; and Mr. Adam (Ahinoam) Evans of Petersburg, VA and his aunt, Mrs. Willie Mae Pauling. He will be greatly missed by his six nephews and two nieces, as well as his many cousins, and other family members, as well as his mother- and father-in-laws: Mr. Ernest and Sanretha Yates of Bishopville, SC.

Mr. Leon (L.A.) Harper, 67

Mr. Leon (L.A.) Harper, Sr. 67, of 158 Creighton Rd., Winnsboro, SCdied on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Fairfield Health Care in Ridgeway, SC. Leon was born June 20, 1948 and was the son of the late Claude and Lugenia Mableton Harper.
 Educated in the public schools of Fairfield County, Leon was a member of New Hope A.M.E. Church.  He was formerly employed with CCI and Wells Fargo as a security guard.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Tracey Marshall and Rebecca Harper, both of Columbia, SC, one son, Leon Anthony Harper, Jr. of Winnsboro, SC; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; sisters Delores Gilyard, Geneva Bell, Rev. Claudia Richardson, and Virginia Hart.
Memorial services will be held Sunday August 16, 2015 @ 3:00pm Russell-McCutchen Chapel.  The Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home is serving the Harper family and is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. David Smith Jr. 63



David Smith, Jr., son the late David Smith Jr. and Ollie Bea Gilchrist Smith, departed this life on Monday, August 3, 2015 at home in Winnsboro, SC.

David was born in Chesterfield, SC, was raised in Ossining, NY and was a record holding basketball and football player in high school. He attended junior colleges under basketball scholarships. David enlisted in the National Guard, worked for Con Edison, worked as an engineer for several Westchester County hotels, and later became a Westchester County Department of Correction Officer.

In 2002, David was honorably discharged as a Sergeant with the US Army National Guard. In 2007 and he retired as a Correction Officer with the Westchester County Department of Correction.  In 2011 he and his wife relocated to SC where they built their retirement home, and in 2012 David retired from the US Army National Guard.

David joined Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in Winnsboro in 2011, where he faithfully attended Sunday School and regular service when his condition permitted. He loved hearing the church choir sing the old gospel songs and getting a word from his pastor.

David leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife, Mattie (Cookie) Stewart Grady Smith; his brothers Clinton Louis Smith, Rogers (Venus) Smith, Michael (Leah) Smith and James Smith of Ossining NY; his sisters Evelyn Smith Simmons and Ollie Arie Smith of Ossining, NY ; Aunts Sylvia Hazel of CT, Frances Smith of Ossining, NY  and Mazella Gilchrist of Greensboro, NC; Uncle Louis T. Gilchrist of Ossining, NY; mother-in-law Almeter Stewart Grady of Tarrytown NY;  stepson Will Jay (Maureen) Simmons, III and grandchildren Christian Tyler Simmons, Brianna Wallace and Mariah Wallace of Durham, NC; nieces Ashia Johnson of Ossining, NY and Eyana (Larry) Esters of Bowie, MD; nephews Maurice (Crystina) Johnson of Philadelphia, PA, Brian Johnson of Ossining NY, and  Donte (Michelle) Battle of Florida; and Denye and Jafye  of Ossining, NY;great nieces Abionah Smith, Kiera Battle, and Charis Esters, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

 VernillaTurnage Glenn, the youngest daughter of Luther James Turnageand Maggie Buchanan, was born and reared in the St. James community in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  She was baptized and nurtured at St. James AME Zion Church, a church of which her great grandfather was the organizing pastor in the early 1880s.  She received her early education at St. James Elementary School, through the 4th grade.  She later transferred to Coulter Memorial Academy in Cheraw, SC in the 5th grade, and continued her studies there throughout high school and Jr. College.  It was at Coulter Academy where she met the love of her life, Casper Glenn, in 1939. 
Always a wiz in math, Vernillareceived an academic scholarship to attend Johnson C. Smith University, where she majored in Mathematics.  As a result of her academic achievement, she was elected to the National Honorary Scientific Society of Beta Kappa Chi in 1944.  Later receiving her Master’s Degree in Education from San Diego State University, and having graduated with a 4.0 GPA, she was elected to the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi in 1977.   She also was a graduate student in Mathematics at Stanford University and the University of Arizona.  Both of these opportunities were made possible by grants from the National Science Foundation.  Vernilla used her God-given gift in mathematics to teach hundreds of youth for over 30 years. 
While education was very high on her list of priorities, Vernilla put family and service to others above everything else.  By the time all three of her children turned 6 years old, they had their own library cards.  For her, education and church were paramount.  She wanted her children to get a good education, and a deep grounding in the Christian faith.  She put her teaching career on hold, from the time of the birth of her 1st child until the last one attended kindergarten.   She then returned to her beloved career as a Mathematics teacher.  Over the years Vernilla was involved in countless community initiatives.  She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Math Tutor, and YWCA Teen Advisor.  She was honored to be elected as an elder in 4 different Presbyterian churches, including one in Nairobi, Kenya.
Vernilla was preceded in death by her two older sisters, Louise Ford and Vernette Evans. She is survived by her three children, June Glenn Lawson, MD(General Practitioner), Joy Ahmad, MA (Counselor), Casper T. Glenn, MD, (Emergency Medicine), 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and her her husband of over 70 years, Casper T. Glenn.
Gravesides service will be Friday August 7, 2015 @ 11:00am Shiloh Presbyterian Church cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday August 6, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at The Russell-McCutchen Funeral

Mrs. Christine "Tina" Able, 85

Mrs. Christine “Tina” Alston Able was born February 9, 1930 to the late Hezekiah Alston, Sr. and the late Alberta Kennedy.  She departed this life on Monday, June 15, 2015 at her home in Ridgeway, SC.
Christine was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ridgeway, SC. She later became affiliated with Calvary Baptist Church in Blythewood, SC. Christine was a faithful member at both churches.
Christine was employed for 5 years as a CNA at Tanglewood Healthcare Center in Ridgeway, SC.  She was very caring and loving to the residents of Tanglewood.
Her memory is cherished by her son, Ernest (Eva) Able Sr. of Winnsboro, SC; her brother, Hezekiah (Betty) Alston of Ridgeway, SC; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Bertha Gillard of charlotte, NC and Mrs. Carrie M. Able of Ridgeway, SC; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of loving family and friends.
Special thanks to her granddaughter Dolsie Able and great-granddaughter Alexcian Able for all of the many sacrifices you made to give your Grandmother the best possible care.
Mrs. Able was preceded in death by her husband of more than 60 years, Mr. Wesley Able, her brother Damon Alston of Ridgeway, SCand her sister, Mrs. Roberta Alston O’Daniel of Jamaica, NY.

Sgt.  Kennieth  E. Pickett, 70, 60 Keyhole Dr., Winnsboro  departed this earthly life on Sunday, May 31, 2015.  He was born in Fairfield County the son of the late Samuel and Fannie C. Pickett.  He is survived by his Wife Louise H. Pickett of Winnsboro, S.C.;  one son, Kelsey L. Pickett  of Columbia, SC; three daughters, Portese T. Hollingsworth , Regina  Simmons of Winnsboro, SC,  Tara Harris of Columbia, SC, ; three brothers, Richard Pickett of Rochester,  New York, James Pickett of Columbia, SC, Samuel Pickett of Winnsboro, SC.; three step-sisters, Lillie B. Harrison, Rebecca Hill, Ella M. Trapp; two step-brothers , Preston Brewer, George Sampson; two God-brothers, Willie Burrell, Walter L. Pickett, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Joseph Miller, 95

Elder Joseph Miller was born March 26, 1920 in Lugoff, South Carolina. He was the youngest of eight children born to the late Rev. Robert Miller, Sr. and Adeline Jackson Miller. He transitioned from this earth into eternal life on Friday, May 29, 2015.The family resided near the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, in a strong religious Christian environment; which had a profound influence on Elder Miller’s spiritual development.
He was educated in the Richland County public school system. In 1942 he entered the United States Navy and in 1947 he was united in holy matrimony to Edith Grooms of Eastover, South Carolina,  whom departed her earthy life on July 5, 2013.

 Elder Miller worked as a carpenter at Fort Jackson, SC for 30 years.  As an entrepreneur, he did home renovations, and used his carpenter skills in constructing his own home as well as his church. 

Elder Miller was a very influential role model in his community as Pastor of the True Gospel Church in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Church, of Eastover, SC. He was affiliated with the Progressive Church and the Emanuel Church of Christ. He later joined Church of God & True Holiness. Elder Miller always emphasized putting God first! He loved the Lord and was committed to serving Him. He was a very respected, admired and loved by everyone who knew him.

Elder Miller was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Edith Grooms Miller;  a son Steven Miller; two sisters Mrs. Florie Miller Highsmith, Mrs. Annie Mae Miller Garrett; four brothers, Deacon Clayton Miller, Sr., Mr. Samuel Miller, Mr. Roddy Miller, Sr.,  and Rev. Robert Miller, Jr.

He is survived by one sister Lessie Miller-Dinkins of Columbia, SC.

He leaves to cherish his memories; a son Rev. Willie (Minnie) Jacobs of Las Vegas NV; a daughter-in-law, Gwenevere W. Miller of Sumter, SC; seven grandchildren:  Crystal Jacobs Givens (Alford), Cedric Jacobs (Trevenia)  of Las Vegas, NV.; Mr. Eric Miller of Germany, Mrs. Chanarrah Diamond English (Corey)of Columbia, SC; Ms. Erika V. Miller, Ms. Stepharoon Miller, of Sumter, SC and Vonetta Witherspoon of Missouri;  fifteen great-grand children and four great- great grandchildren; a very special great niece Barbara Scott-Duckett and a host of other loving family members and friends.

Mr. James Able Sr. 86

James Able Sr. of James Able & Sons was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday May 2, 2015 in Columbia at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. James was the 11th child born to Haskell & Daisy Green Able. He attended Public Schools of Fairfield County.
He married Carrie M. Belton his childhood sweetheart whom he called his “sweetie”; unto this union 6 children were born.
James join Calvary Baptist Church at an early age, where he served faithfully on the Trustee/Financial Ministry for many of those years as Chairman of the Trustee Board, where eventually he received the honor of Trustee Emeritus.
 James was a member of Purity Lodge # 42 of Ridgeway, South Carolina.
He was the founder/owner of James Able Pulpwood as well as James Able & Sons Asphalt Paving for over 40+ years. He was a forceful yet gentle man loved by many people.
He was instrumental in helping many young men get started in the working world. He instilled in them the importance of hard work and being a man. This trait is seen in his sons as well as his grandsons.
James leaves to morn his passing his wife of 67 years, Carrie Mae and children, James Jr. (Betty); Porter (Hattie); of Ridgeway ,South Carolina, Preston (Penilla) of Bloomfield Conn, Bobby (deceased) (Clemetine); Shirley of Ridgeway South Carolina, Patricia of Douglasville, GA and Cynthia of Morrisville, North Carolina. One sister Bertha Gillard of Charlotte, North Carolina. Two sister-in-laws, Christina Able of Ridgeway South Carolina and Nancy Exum of Washington, DC. Two brother-in-laws Andrew and William Belton of Washington, DC. Twelve grandchildren Marcus, Laurie, Rhonda, Gerald, Porter (Rick), Christopher, Shawn, Latisha, Crawford, Pamela, Hope and Paula.
 A special niece Dryea (Willie) of Washington, DC. A special nephew Willie Able Sr. (his family) of Ridgeway, South Carolina.  A host of loving and caring nieces and nephews and other close relatives and friends who will cherishes his memories.
The services for Mr. James Able Sr. will be Thursday May 7th at 11:00am (10:00am viewing) at St. Mark Baptist Church Ridgeway, South Carolina with Committal, Benediction and interment at Calvary Baptist Church 2815 Peach Road, Ridgeway, South Carolina.

Ms. Mary Lou Williams, 86, 210 Dawkins Rd. Blair, SC departed this life on April 24, 2015.She is survived by her children: Desmond and Nicole Williams of Bronx NY, David (Rosalyn) Williams, of the home and seven grandchildren. A memorial Service will be held Thursday April 30, 2015 at Spiritual Way Church of Christ, 2083 Syrup Mill Rd of Ridgeway SC. Mrs.Lilly Mae Douglas, 80

Lilly Mae Wadlington, better known to most as Mae was born May 19, 1934, in Blair, S.C. On April 21, 2015, God wrapped his arms around Mae and lifted her to rest from the Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI. leaving an unfillable void in many lives.
Lilly Mae Wadlington,was born to the late Ruben Eddie Martin and Mary Jane (Boykin)Morgan.  She attended the Fairfield County Public School System and accepted Christ at an early age at The Gethsemane Baptist Church in Blair, SC. Lilly enjoyed speaking about happy childhood memories with her siblings, Sadie Robinson (preceded her in death), Morris Morgan and cousin, Thomas Wadlington (preceded her in death).
In 1951 Lilly Mae Douglas married Robert Lee Douglas (preceded her death) in South Carolina and 4 children were born to this union, Mattie, Blossom, Robert Jr. (preceded her in death), and Elbert. In 1952 Robert migrated to Detroit, Mi for employment opportunities where Lilly later followed. From this union Lilly accepted and became a part of an extended new family and created special bonds with, Lillie Mae Wallington, Willie and Laura Young, Celeste and Ira Goodwin, Eddie Mae Walton and a host of other family members.
A consummate mother and homemaker, Lilly was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends.  She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed shopping. She was well known for her beautiful suits and hats. Lilly was an advocate and supporter of her Woodbridge Community where she lived, serving on the Woodbridge Counsel and volunteering at the 3rd Precinct Police department for many years, where she met and made incredible friends (Rudell, Mary, Mr. Crume and Bill Sledge). Lilly also enjoyed playing cards with her family and close friends (Mary). Lilly mostly enjoyed traveling back to her hometown of Blair, SC. Whenever the opportunity presented.
Lilly Douglas leaves to cherish in loving memories, 3 children Mattie Begley of Milan, Mi. Blossom (Joys) King, Elbert (Denise) Douglas both of Detroit, Mi. and daughter in law Patricia Douglas of Detroit, Mi.One Brother Morris (Connie) Morgan of Columbia, S.C ,One sister Eddie Mae Wilson of Jenkinsville, S.C., One sister in law Floree Rickets of Philadelphia, P.A.  Thelma M. Reid, 44, 74 Chinook Dr. Blair, SC, entered into eternal rest on Friday April 3, 2015 at Levine and Dickson Hospice Center, Huntersville, NC.  She bid this earthly life farewell to start her heavenly journey.  She was born in Fairfield County on Oct. 3, 1970; she was the daughter of Mr. Jessie Woodward and the late Jessie M. Feaster. She was a member of Hassion Hill Baptist Church.  She was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County and graduated from Fairfield Central High School. Celebrating the victory of life over death are Thelma’s father, Jessie; three sisters, Bobbie Feaster, Jerrie (Willie) Charles, both of Blair, SC; and Jessie (Marcus) Wilson, of Jackson, Mississippi, five Aunts; Cora Feaster, Ruby Jackson, Dorothy Hopkins, Bessie Feaster, and Mattie Feaster; two uncles; Glenn Woodard, and Clarence Robinson,  and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Mary Hazel Goods, 89

Mary  Hazel Owen was born to the late Mr. John Douglas and Mary Brice Owens on May 1, 1925 here in Winnsboro, SC. She fell asleep in death peacefully at her home on March 27, 2015. 
She was married to the late Mr. Reese Goods in 1954. Mrs. Goods was the beloved mother of Mr.James  Robert  (Ethel) Owens of  Chester, SC; Mr. Eric R. Goods of Baltimore, MD; Mrs. Sharon (Nathaniel) Sims; and  Mr. Neal Mack Kaham of Winnsboro, SC.; 
Mrs. Mary Goods leaves her loving family including her sister and dearest friend, Mrs. Linda Sunkins, and her brother, Mr.Bill (Wendell)Moore of Winnsboro, SC; her fondly remembered niece and nephew, Mrs.Vonda Belton and Mr. Quentin Owens of Winnsboro, SC; her dear aunts, Mrs. Margaret Smith of Winnsboro, SC and Mrs. Lil Cauthen of Rock Hill, SC,. She counted as family Mrs. Melanie Boyd, her close friend and spiritual sister, Mrs. Margaret Johnson and her caregiver, Mrs .Ella Peay. 
As a young woman, Mrs. Goods moved to Baltimore MD, where she lived for 41 years. After moving back to Winnsboro, SC she enjoyed working in the classroom with young children at Fairfield Child Development Center. She retired from Fairfield Central High School cafeteria where students and staff loved her for her personality and her good fried chicken. 
When Mary Hazel saw in her own King James Version Bible at Psalm 83:18 that God has a name, and His name is Jehovah, she was excited, and had to tell everybody she knew. This she did faithfully until her death, ever since she was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witness on June 19, 1987.
 Mary Goods was known for her fine voice, and all who heard her sing felt that they had been bestowed with a precious gift. 
Sister Mary Hazel Owens Goods looks forward to seeing her 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, as well as all of her many other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and her many, many friends in God's paradise new earth in the resurrection.

Mrs.Alberta H. James
Sister Alberta James 76, died at Palmetto Richland Hospital on Tuesday, March 17 2015, to enter her heavenly home. Alberta was born on January 19, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Wade and Mamie O’ Meater Henderson.  Alberta was baptized at an early age and became a member of the Mt Moriah Baptist church in Jenkinsville, South Carolina. She was employed at Glenn’s 6 to 10 store for 15 years and the department of Dept. of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) for 20 years which she retired. Alberta loved her children, grandchildren and especially her great grandchildren. Kanyla and Melonie brought her great joy and laughter in their actions, words, and love. She was well known in the community especially for her cooking and loved by many.
Alberta was preceded in death by: her husband Jimmy James of 47 years, her sons Theodore Henderson and Terry James, brothers Willie, John, Lionel, Bennie Lee, Clyde, and Jacob Henderson and son-in-law Charlie Richards.

Her everlasting memories will live on forever through her family, children:  Minster Shirley(Alpheaus )

Mr. Charles E. Johnson, 50

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.
On Sunday March 15, 2015 God saw that it was time to take away the pain and sorrow, so at 4:11 am God came and took the sting out of death for Charles. (oh death, oh death where is thou sting).
Charles E. Johnson Sr. was born in Fairfield County on June 3, 1964 to the late Ruby Johnson Martin and the late Charles Young.
He attended Fairfield County Schools and graduated in the class of 1982. He was a former member of Victory In Christ Outreach of Columbia, SC. Later came to Shady Grove Independent with his family until the decline of his health. Charles was a hard working all around man of God. To care for his family, he did what it took. Charles worked for Manhattan Shirt Company for 27 years until the closing, then he went to Kraft Foods. He worked part time at Captain Galley, Flying J, he cut grass on his spare time.
He leaves to cherish his memory; His wife of 23 years wonderful years Carolyn Loraine Johnson of the home. 1 daughter; Fredlesa D. Johnson, 1 step-daughter; Creshondra M. Beaver, 1 son; Charles E. Mr. Taber Tyrone Cook, 45

Mr. Taber Tyrone Cook, 45 was born on May, 24, 1969 to Claude Cook and Intisar (Bernice ) Ashraf. He departed this earthly life on Feb. 23, 2015. Tabor was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County, Phillips College, and Midland Technical College, earning an Associate Degree in Computer Science. He was a former employee at the Department of Transportation.  He was most recently employed with US Security. Taber participated with numerous community and civic organizations including Fairfield Planning Committee, Fairfield County Council and Zoning Committee. Taber’s desire to help others and improve himself which led to several entrepreneurial adventures. He never met a stranger. Funeral services will be held 3:00pm Thursday February 26, 2015 at Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home Chapel.Burial will be at Morris Creek Baptist Church Cemetery on Morris Creek Church Rd.
Visitation will be Wednesday February 25, 2015 from 2pm to 6pm at Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home. The Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home is serving the Cook family and is in charge of arrangements.


Mr. Jim Ed Hall, 93


Jim Ed Hall, a long-time resident of the Middle Six Community in Winnsboro died on Monday, February 23, 2015.  He was 93 years old.  Mr.  Hall spent the last few years at Pruitt Nursing Home in Ridgeway.  A memorial will be held on Saturday, March 14th 2015 at 12:00 noon at Russell McCutchen Funeral Home.  Mr Hall is survived by one sister, Mrs. Dorothy McGriff. 



Ms. Heline Chambers, 54


On February 20, 2015, God sent one of his angels down to earth to pick up a worthy saint; Ms. Heline Chambers was born June 25, 1960, in Winnsboro, S.C. She was the daughter Annie Mae Chambers and the late Nelson Chambers Sr.

As a young woman, Heline turned her life over to God at an early age and she served faithfully. She was involved in missionary work and was on the Pulpit Aide Committee at the Apostolic Doctrine Church of Hopkins where she was a member for over 20 years.

Heline graduated in May, 1978 from Winnsboro High School where she was an honor student, a member of the National Beta Club as well as several other clubs.

Heline was preceded in death by her father, Nelson Chambers Sr. and three brothers: Robert Davis, Nelson Chambers Jr. and Robert Chambers.

She learned how to be a responsible young adult by working in the school district at an early age. Later she was employed by Kyzers of Winnsboro for many years before working at Timm’s Medi Mart in Ridgeway, S.C. until she moved to Charleston, S.C. in the early nineties. While living in Charleston, S.C. for over 20 years, Heline decided to continue her education by pursuing an Associates Degree at Trident Technical College while working as a Pharmacy Tech at MUSC of Charleston.

Although, Heline did not have any children she was a god-mother, a second mother to many, a sister, a loving aunt to a host of nieces and nephews and a friend to hundreds perhaps thousands of people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.


She leaves behind to cherish fond memories: her mother, Annie Mae Chambers; three brothers: Ernest (Florence) Chambers; Milton (Joann) Chambers; and Paul (Delois) Chambers all of Winnsboro, SC; three sisters: Lois Souvenance and Ester C. (Willie) McDaniel of Winnsboro, SC and Eleanor Chambers Johnson of Columbia, SC; three sister-in-laws; Essie Davis of Winnsboro, SC; Candy Chambers of Philadelphia, PA and Lula Chambers of Winnsboro, SC two aunts: Margaret Mickens of Baltimore and Emma Cooper of Winnsboro and one uncle: Willie Davis of Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, god-children, cousins, other relatives and friends. 
Funeral services will be Saturday February 28, 2015 at 2:00pm Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church  2508 Camp Welfare Rd. Winnsboro SC 29180 with burial at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Vivian Lee Walker Glenn, 83

Vivian Lee Walker Glenn was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on March 21, 1931 to William Lee Walker Sr., and Louise Williams Walker. She was the oldest of five children. Her only brother William (Bill) Walker, sisters Janet Brown and Jackie Walls, all preceded her in death.

When Vivian was in high school, it was her father's dream for his children to get a college education since he had to leave Howard University after a year to help support his family. She told a teacher that she wanted to go to college. Her teacher believed that Negroes should be domestics and not college-bound. She tried to deter Vivian from attending college but was unsuccessful. After receiving her Bachelor's degree in education at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania, she taught school in New Jersey and Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, she met her husband of 57 years, the Rev. Dr. Lawrence T. Glenn, Sr.

Vivian and Lawrence moved to Detroit to begin their life journey together. She was employed as an elementary teacher in the Detroit Public School’s system. Vivian went on to receive her Master's of Education at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Vivian taught for almost 40 years at Moore, Angel and Woodard schools.

Vivian was a very vibrant and active lady in her church. She was a charter member of Broadstreet Presbyterian Church and she served in various areas of the church, in addition to supporting her husband as the Pastor's wife. She enjoyed being involved with people in the community and various service organizations. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Top Ladies of Distinction, Kenjockety (Presbyterian Minister Wives), and an officer of the Abatenjwa League (Interdenominational Ministers’ Wives and Widows). Vivian served on boards of the Presbytery and Presbyterian Villages of Michigan. Vivian was a founding member of the Michigan Black Presbyterian Caucus. She was a recipient of many awards including Church Woman of the Year by the Michigan Chronicle in 1982 and received the Top Lady of the Year for the City of Detroit in 2009. Vivian stayed active and supported each of her organizations as long as her body would allow. Vivian was an active member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association. She was also a lifetime member of the NAACP.

Words that would describe Vivian's essence would be sweet, loving, caring, self-giving, pleasant and a positive force. She enjoyed making other people comfortable and happy. Vivian enjoyed taking pictures of family and friends. Her life expressed the spiritual law of treating others as you would like others to treat you. Vivian’s passion was to give to others. She gave until she could give no more.


She leaves behind her beloved husband Rev. Dr. Lawrence T. Glenn Sr., daughter, Lori Tanya Glenn Harris (Emanuel), and son, Lawrence T. Glenn Jr. (Janet); and her sister, Marilyn Mills of Voorhees, New Jersey; grandchildren, Lauren T. Glenn, Lawrence T. Glenn III, Lea T. Glenn, Emanuel D. Glenn Harris, Imani L. Glenn Harris, Nia A. Glenn Harris, Jerimiah L. Glenn Harris and Queshia Harris. Vivian also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, extended church family of Broadstreet Presbyterian Church and a host of friends who truly loved her.

Mrs. Mattie Lou Pearson Evans, 85

Mrs. Mattie L. Pearson Evans, 85, 1701 W. Peach Rd Winnsboro, SC. died Jan. 20, 2015. She was born in Fairfield County. She is survived by three sons: James Evans Columbia SC, Leroy (Dora) Evans, Winnsboro SC, Adam (Ahinoam) Evans, Ruby SC. Three daughters: Mattie (James) Smiling Columbia SC, Mamie (Leroy) Pauling, Mary Robinson Winnsboro SC. Two sisters: Bernice (Brooks) Ashford, Davie Johnson Winnsboro SC. Funeral Services will be held Friday Jan. 23, 2015 at 2:00pm  Kingdom Hall of Winnsboro SC, with burial in the Fairfield comm. Cemetery.
